Florida coronavirus: Another record day for daily increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations, deaths

TAMPA (WFLA) — A day after the state reached a significant milestone in surpassing 300,000 total coronavirus cases, Florida health officials have reported another record day for the highest daily increase of coronavirus-related hospitalizations and deaths on Thursday.

Florida hospitals have taken in an additional 491 patients, the latest daily report says. That means 19,825 residents have been hospitalized since the pandemic began.

GOP restricts convention attendance as Florida coronavirus cases surge

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican National Committee is sharply restricting attendance on three of the four nights of its convention in Jacksonville, Florida, next month, as it looks for ways to move forward with the event while coronavirus cases are spiking in the state.

RNC chair Ronna McDaniel said in a letter to RNC members that only the roughly 2,500 regular delegates to the convention would be permitted to attend the opening three nights of the convention. Delegates, their guests and alternate delegates would be permitted to attend the final night, Aug. 27, when President Donald Trump is set to deliver his acceptance speech.

UK, US, Canada accuse Russia of hacking virus vaccine trials

LONDON (AP) — Britain, the United States and Canada say Russia is trying to steal information from researchers seeking a COVID-19 vaccine.

The three nations alleged Thursday that hacking group APT29, also known as Cozy Bear and said to be part of the Russian intelligence service, is attacking academic and pharmaceutical research institutions involved in coronavirus vaccine development.
