PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — Currently, when a child or an adult is reported missing, their names and identities are sent to the Florida and national crime information center.

But a new bill being discussed by Florida lawmakers would send those names to a third national registry.

Whether they are a missing child or an adult, Senate Bill 1332 (Missing Persons) will allow their names to be added automatically to the national missing and unidentified persons system.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco is giving the bill his endorsement.

Nocco said getting as many outlets to alert the public could mean the difference in finding missing people safe and sound.

“People think our K-9 unit, that the majority, they go after criminals, but a large percentage of our calls is helping those in need,” Nocco said. “Whether they’re lost, have dementia or suicide. It’s helping that person which is important because they have a loved one.”

The bill is currently making its way through the state Senate.

The bill is on the special order calendar on Wednesday for a vote on its second reading.

And if it follows the current trend, Wednesday’s vote will be unanimous.
