For a Pasco County couple, the care they have for their neighbors is easy to spot week in and week out.
On a rainy New Port Richey morning, we met Norman and Sandy Alexander. Norman had just returned from a local food bank, which they financially help support, with food they’ll distribute. They do it every Thursday.
“We will distribute it on the cart during the morning and into the afternoon, if it has to be, to people here,” Sandy said.
With the current economy, they say the need here has grown.
“I have probably half a dozen to a dozen people that probably can use the food because they moved in here when the rent was $180 to $225,” Norman said. “Now it’s $700, $800.”
The couple has been doing this the past two years now. But it’s really nothing new.
“I did it for 14 years down in Pinellas, called a Sun Coast Haven of Rest, a mission they feed people,” Norman said. “They pass food out every day.”
Norman is an Air Force veteran who says if they still need him, he’s in.
They say the payback for all they do is well worth it.
“I say you cannot out give God,” Norman said. “There’s no way. No matter what we’ve done in our life what we’ve given out is coming back two, three, 10-fold.”
The couple’s romance is about to enter its 55th year.
